SPC Senkosol Ros—Hero On Call
I enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2004 at 17. I was in the Junior Reserve Officer Training program and was highly motivated to experience the adventures of being in the service. Since I was a junior in high school, I was placed in the Split Option program. Within this program I was able to attend Basic Combat Training (BCT) during the summer and return home after completion of BCT, which was great for me at the time. I was never away from my family for so long and so far, I was happy to be able to return home after the nine-week Basic Training Course.
It felt great to return home as a soldier. I felt like I had transformed, becoming physically and mentally tougher. So, senior year definitely went well and soon after I shipped back out to Advanced Individual Training, to my Paralegal School. I feel like I've accomplished so much in a short amount of time and I'm sure there are more opportunities the National Guard will offer me.
Nowadays I drill at my unit one weekend a month at the battalion level and attend school. I am currently receiving tuition assistance, the Montgomery G.I. Bill and the Kicker bonus. I have about three years left and I'm planning to make the most of it and will most likely consider re-enlisting.
